Colours fly at Woodbine Beach for Holi Toronto 2014

Holi, the Hindu festival of colours, was celebrated a little late in Toronto this year. The festival dates this year were actually March 27 and 28 this year, but we had such cold temperatures in March the event organizers pushed the date to April 6th, a great decision because it turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day. It took us a little while to figure out just where this thing was happening but eventually we saw the crowd form and the colour start to fly.

I had thought I would hang back to get some shots and not get any colour on me, but that was never gonna happen – if you were there you were getting powder on you, one way or another. The longer you remained without colour on you, the more of a target you were. After the first person walked up to me, said “Happy Holi” and swiped a handful of colour across my face that was it, no point in trying to stay clean now…fortunately the powered colour is organic and water-soluable, so it’s all good fun. As you can see from the smiles on everyone’s faces, it brought out the kid in all of us. I did get lots of strange looks as I walked home afterwards, alone, covered in colour, completely out of context.
